Water in My Garage!
Posted By fhudson on March 23, 2023
We have had an enormous amount of rainfall compared to previous years. Looking at the data, we haven’t seen rain in inches like this in more than 15 years. Information was recently provided in your DIDUKNOW Newsletter concerning this. The garages are constructed with a rear-retaining wall, typically consisting of cinder block, because the garages are partially subterranean, the block retaining walls have ‘weep holes,’ to help reduce the hydrostatic pressure created from water saturated soil.
Weep holes are small, evenly spaced holes, typically along the bottom section of your wall
They protect the structural integrity of the wall by allowing underground water to seep
through, preventing pressure build-up
Weep holes should not be sealed with caulk or mortar
Due to this design characteristic, during the rainy season, you will see water in the garages this is normal and to be expected.
It is especially important that, if you do store items in your garage, that you elevate these items off
the floor to avoid water damage.
